Oh dear….

This is the news that one of the most influential musical artists in Austria lost his battle with cancer today. He was only sixty.

Georg Danzer had the audacity to start writing songs in local dialect in the Seventies when other artists were blithely imitating US artists. His was a unique voice. He could mix a satiric tone and turn it bitter at the end and show a vast social conscience doing so. I only saw him live in concert once, but the atmosphere was–quiet, intimate. Unfortunately I never got to meet him personally as I did others of his sort through my work.

YouTube doesn’t have much of his music available, but there is one decent one of Luminita Soare doing his ‘White Horses’ in fado style… for anyone watching, the odd stills in a slaughter house are from a yearly actionist ‘festival’ that artist Hermann Nitsch performs, the ‘Orgiastic Mystery Play’, loosely translated. You don’t want to know… It deals with sacrifice, and lots of blood, and Catholic rituals, but turned up-side down. You can Google him. He used to be a scandal, and now he’s respectable.

Here is a link to something of Georg Danzer’s that I translated once. I was told by a professional author that it was very exact and good.

People here are really devasted about his passing.

I loved the translation — sounds like he’d have made a helluva dent over here, had he chosen to gift us with his snark.
