Let’s Talk

Posted by Realist on August 25, 2008 – 12:07 am

When did it become a sin for progressives to question the decisions/positions of their own candidates? Why is it suddenly okay to tell those of us who have questions that we need to be quiet, or to, as someone over at Jaye’s place put it a few weeks back, “get in line” until the election is over?

I’m sick and fucking tired of being told that questioning Obama is equal to supporting McCain. Every issue that will be important after the election is already important today and I don’t see how halting discussion until we have a new president is helpful in any way. We are perfectly capable of supporting a person/party without liking everything they say or believe. I’d like to be able to discuss this shit without being treated as if I’m betraying the cause.

No, I’m not singling anyone out for finger-pointing here. Frankly, my arms would get tired if I tried. This attitude has been shown by too many people at most blogs I’ve visited recently as well as the last couple of conventions I’ve attended. I just want to know why these people believe that we can’t have party unity while at the same time discussing the issues that we don’t agree on. The Democratic Party wouldn’t be nearly as big and diverse as it is if there was a requirement that we all agree on everything.

If we can’t talk about these issues now, when can we? I’m dying to know.

Great post! And I’m in agreement on it all. One of the things the “we can’t mention that” crowd seem to forget is that on pretty much all of these issues mccain is much worse and would come out smelling like the shit he is. One problem I do see aside from the “we can’t mention that” crowd though is the way the neo-con run MSM spins these discussions of the issues as “the dem party in chaos”. But of course that BS should in no way be allowed to silence the discussion! That’s exactly what the slime ball MSM wants, to control the entire converstation surrounding who we are and what we want. Have you seen that Faux “News” clip of them trying to spin the convention protests and a bunch of protesters shouting “Fuck Faux News!” Too funny but not that effective. I think they should have done a citizens arrest of the Faux clown for creating and distributing anti-American propaganda!

You’re lucky you didn’t sign on to that e-mail list for the GetFISAright thing. There was a lot of that BS there! I e-mailed back and forth with a few of those people just trying to explain why the issues were more important then not questioning the candidates position on the issue. And that about drove me to drink! Damn near like trying to communicate with a winger! One of the more intellegent points from them? I would be “that guy” if I didn’t blindly support no matter what destructive positions Obama took. A lot of them are going to be damn disappointed when the election is over and Obama doesn’t suddenly turn back into the progressive they thought he was. I understand the desperate need to keep the likes of mccain away from our government but “by all means” shouldn’t include selling out on the important issues!

Yep. I’ve noticed that as well. People are now having to start out any attempt at a discussion with a “Yes, McCain is worse” disclaimer, as if that isn’t a given. Even then, it is damn near impossible to be critical of Obama without being treated like a traitor.

It is now happening with the Biden decision. I’m hearing a lot of “It’s Obama’s decision and we need to stand beside him”. We have every right to question that decision. Yeah, it wasn’t ours to make, but we are the ones who will have to live with it for a potential 8 years.

Funny you mention this because I’ve heard a lot of people say that this isn’t the time to question him. We need to “support” (put in scare quotes because that support must come with NO questions) him now and take him on where we disagree after he is elected. I have two problems with this thought:

    1) We risk giving Obama the idea that he was elected because we agree with him on issues we don’t, lowering the odds that he will listen to us when the time comes.

    2) I can already see those supporters who told us to wait until he’s elected turning it around on us, wondering why we waited so long to express criticism.

    Yes, yes, and more yes!

Am I the only masochist watching the “convention” (corporate shuck-and-jive is more like it) tonight?

Nothing entertains me more than hearing that GIANT FLAMING BRAGGING BUSH WHORE BOB SCHIEFFER, TRYING TO START “SCUTTLEBUTT” THAT DOESN’T EVEN FUCKING ***EXIST***!!!!!!

When are they going to retire that fucktard? Seriously. I know that Leslie Moonves doesn’t know his ass from a hole in the ground from JOURNALISM, but FOR FUCK’S SAKE!!! The man is beyond DODDERING, he’s full-on DEMENTIA AT THIS POINT!!!!!!

Yeah, don’t talk about the ISSUES, talk about BILL CLINTON’S FUCKING ***EGO***, WHYDONTCHA?!?!?!?!

I can’t even talk about Teddy. Just breaks my fucking heart. Man is killing himself to be a part of the corporate takeover, and doesn’t even see how he’s being USED. And of course, the CBS/Viacom WHORES have to keep reminding us that “HE’LL NEVER BE JOHN OR BOBBY!!!” Yeah, ’cause Teddy never achieved anything in his OWN right, he’s just a LEGACY CASE.

Shouldn’t they be saving that shit for the Bush/Cheney/Rove cabal next week?

And yes, I’ve been watching the PBS coverage, too, but I’d sure as hell rather see Gwen Ifill being NOMINATED for VP than reporting on that bigoted MORON fucking BIDEN.
