Tough times for some of Seattle’s independent bookstores

Posted by Realist on August 25, 2008 – 12:43 am

MaryAnne Gwinn had contacted Dan a while back about why we closed Jackson Street Books for her article about recent departures of other bookstores. It ran today.

We’re glad she mentioned Toure Apparel. Maybe that parking lot will get some attention now.

Good piece, but annoying that they only mentioned Dan as the “owner,” singular. Also, the irony of the success of Mystery was compared to the loss of Jackson Street was not lost on me. Did she know of the relation between the stores or was she just being anecdotal?

Hate to see small businesses being splattered by the corporate monstrosities and the apathetic consumers. And, unfortunately, in the current “culture,” books are considered a “luxury item,” instead of a necessity for life. EnviroStomper SUVs are “necessary,” but books are too expensive. Nice priorities, eh? People don’t mind laying out a hundred bucks a month for satellite TV, but they won’t bother to go to a library or bookstore for literate fare.

And my suck-ass electric company is browning out, so I’d better hit post and get out while I can.

As a former independent used book-store owner myself I feel Seattle’s loss. I consider it a sad statement on our cultural decline.

I blame the dumb down America Republicans who cut funding for anything cultural as often as they can. Can’t have the working class populatin reading, might give them ideas and make them raise their heads and ask questions.

Exxxxactly. Explains how Murkin television works, too, huh. Keep us distracted with Springer and When Animals Attack, and we won’t bother to notice as you’re stealing the fucking country out from under us…

OMG! you guys should go look at the comment Hypatia left at the JSBblogspot. She made me cry. I was so glad, and honored to send books to the rez for her. we sent, like 14 BIG cartons. The whole kids section by the end of it. And it couldn’t have found a better home!

I'll definitely do that in the morning, brain-dead and being tortured by a screaming-psycho kitty cat tonight.

And bless y'all's hearts. Y'all are the kind of people who INSPIRE great books, y'know that? If there weren't book-lovers like you & Dan in the world, the publishing industry (as venal and exclusionary and privileged-clique as it is) wouldn't have SHIT left.

And I bet that every one of those rez kids knows y'all's names and is as thankful for y'all as I am.
